Jamini Roy

One of the most influential painters of 20th century, Jamini Roy was born in 1887 at Beliator village in Bankura district of Bengal. His works are known for giving India a unique individual painting style. He was very much influenced by rich heritage of traditional village and folk arts. He depicted everyday lives of people of rural Region. He belonged to a middle class family and his father was also an amateur artist. Jamini Roy is credited to produce several wonderful works the likes of which include, Makara, Warrior King, Cats Plus, Santhal Boy with Drum, Krishna and Balarama, Kitten, Cats Sharing a Prawn, Ravana, Sita and Jatayu, St. Ann and the Blessed Virgin, Seated Woman in Sari, Krishna And Radha Dancing, Virgin And Child, Krishna with Gopis in Boat, and Crucifixion with Attendant Angels etc.

 

His inclination in painting was visible from early age and his initial encounter with brush largely depicted European tradition. But soon he developed his own signature style and fame kept coming his way. His preferred medium was oil paintings that gave expressions to every day lives of rural population. His themes were varied. Jamini Roy chose joy, sorrow, mythological, Jesus Christ, Ramayana etc his themes. He coined the term ‘Flat technique’ that referred to his own style of painting. His works were exhibited in several parts of India and in foreign locales like London and New York as well. A winner of Padma Bhushan, Jamini Roy left us in 1972.
