Canvas

How often we have heard this term, Canvas? One of the most frequently used word in painting world; Canvas derives its origin from Arabic word cannabis. Canvas has multiple uses including painting surface, sails, shoes, backpacks, handbags, marquees and tents. It’s basically a plain woven fabric which is used on those works where durability is of utmost requirement.

 

Painting is the most known and conventional use of canvas. Oil paintings share a symbiotic relationship with canvas. Canvas is first applied to a wooden frame with fine coating like synthetic latex coating. In earlier times, canvas was mostly made up of linen which is more suited to oil painting. Now a day, modern artists’ regularly use cotton stretch canvas.
