Tyeb Mehta
Tyeb Mehta is one of the greatest artists ever born in India. He was born in Kapadvanj district of Gujarat in July 1925. An acclaimed painter, Tyeb Mehta is a man with multiple talents. He redefines excellence in art. It comes as a little surprise to know that he was initially a film editor in a cinema laboratory. His is an interesting life. He listened to his heart’s calling and joined Sir J.J.School of Art, Mumbai. Not yet satisfied with his learning, he also went to Paris and London to refine his painting skills.
After his return, he participated in several exhibitions and immediately made the art world notice his talent. For the record, his first solo exhibition was organized at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 1959. At this juncture he shifted to London where he lived for almost 5 years and further enhanced his skills. His exhibitions are known to produce intense interest in art world. He also participated in several international exhibitions which brought him and India tremendous respect.
He is known to create amazing paintings. His mythology-inspired art works not only prove his knowledge of Indian tradition but also about his versatility. His painting ‘Celebration’ is recorded in history books for fetching highest price for an Indian artist. Another famous work of his is ‘Mahisasura’. He has also won filmfare award for a film called ‘Koodal’. ‘Kalidas Samman’ by the Madhya Pradesh Government is another prestigious award won by this truly talented artist. No doubt, he has contributed immensely in the evolution of Indian art.
